CAIRO, Egypt – In a groundbreaking move to enhance global academic collaborations, the University of Exeter has announced the establishment of its first African campus in Egypt. The signing ceremony of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) took place on Sunday, attended by several distinguished figures, including Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly, Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research Ayman Ashour, UK Ambassador to Egypt Gareth Bayley, and representatives from both institutions involved.

The new campus, a strategic partnership with Ain Shams University, is part of Exeter’s ambitious plan to broaden access to high-quality education and enhance research excellence in Africa. The campus will be housed at Ain Shams University’s international campus, signifying a unique collaboration within the Russell Group’s 24 leading UK universities.

Speaking at the event, Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly highlighted the significance of this partnership. “This collaboration reflects Egypt’s ambition to strengthen academic ties with prestigious global institutions,” he stated, emphasizing the initiative’s role in preparing Egyptian students for both local and international job markets.

Minister Ayman Ashour described the establishment of the African campus as a “groundbreaking achievement,” underscoring its potential to transform higher education across the continent. Ashour added, “This partnership will advance research innovation and create opportunities that will help us address critical global challenges and equip our students for success in an interconnected world.”

The new campus is expected to provide Egyptian youth with access to top-tier British education, thereby enhancing their future career prospects, according to UK Ambassador Gareth Bayley. He conveyed his pride in the collaboration, underscoring the global prestige of British education.

Describing the partnership as a transformative moment for Egyptian higher education and African academia, Mohamed Diaa Zain El Abidine, President of Ain Shams University, expressed significant enthusiasm. He noted that combining world-class education and research with a commitment to addressing both local and global challenges sets a new standard for higher education.

Lisa Roberts, President and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Exeter, also shared her enthusiasm for the partnership. “We are thrilled to collaborate with Ain Shams University. This alignment reflects Exeter’s commitment to academic excellence, knowledge exchange, and a positive global impact,” she highlighted.

The University of Exeter’s African campus within Ain Shams University, is poised to pave the way for increased academic cooperation and innovation in higher education. The project is expected to significantly contribute to Egypt’s 2030 Vision, focusing on advancing research and development and improving the country’s educational standards.
