South Africa, Johannesburg— Microsoft is launching a large-scale digital skills initiative to train one million South Africans in artificial intelligence (AI) and cybersecurity by 2026. This announcement was made on January 23, 2025, by Lillian Barnard, President of Microsoft Africa, during the company’s “AI Tour” event in Johannesburg.
Microsoft has been actively investing in digital skills across Africa. In the past five years, the company has trained four million people, and its broader goal is to upskill 30 million more individuals on the continent over the next five years. This latest effort specifically targets South Africa’s growing need for AI expertise and cybersecurity knowledge.
The program will cater to a wide range of participants, including professionals in business and government, as well as young people seeking to enter the digital economy. A focus will be placed on AI-driven technologies, digital transformation, and cybersecurity fundamentals to address the increasing global demand for tech talent.
While Microsoft has not disclosed the financial details of this initiative, its previous investments in Africa include being the first global “hyperscale” public cloud provider to establish data centers in South Africa. The company continues to expand its footprint in the region, aiming to foster innovation and enhance employability through technology education.
The training program will offer participants industry-recognized certifications, providing a foundation for career advancement in the technology sector. Barnard highlighted the initiative’s objective, stating, “By providing skilling opportunities and access to industry-recognized certifications, our youth will be well-positioned to compete on the global stage.”
Barnard underscored the significance of AI for Africa, emphasizing that with 60% of the continent’s population under the age of 35, there is enormous potential for young talent to contribute to digital transformation. “AI represents a new era for Africa, which has a significant youth population,” she said. Microsoft aims to provide access to the necessary digital tools and training to help this emerging workforce lead in AI innovation and cybersecurity.
