Chuka University Collaborates with The International Atomic Energy Agency

In an effort to strengthen global collaborations in the field of scientific research, Chuka University’s Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Henry Mutembei, recently visited Vienna, Austria, to meet with trainees involved in the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Livestock Project. This initiative, which brings together researchers and institutions from Kenya and beyond, is aimed at enhancing knowledge transfer and fostering collaboration in the realm of assisted reproductive technologies and livestock management.

During his visit in March 2025, Prof. Mutembei engaged with trainees from Chuka University, the University of Nairobi, and Madagascar, as well as experts from the IAEA. The meeting was centered on discussing the trainees’ progress and identifying the next steps following the completion of their training. The focus was on advancing Assisted Reproductive Technologies (ART), a field that has the potential to significantly impact the livestock industry, particularly in regions where agricultural and livestock management are critical to economic development.

In addition to reviewing the trainees’ progress, Prof. Mutembei secured an agreement for Chuka University to host an international summer school on Assisted Reproductive Technologies. This summer school, which is set to welcome 25 international fellows, is expected to enhance a deeper exchange of knowledge and collaboration among scientists and researchers from various countries. “This collaboration represents a major leap forward for Chuka University in terms of its international academic reach,” said Prof. Mutembei in a statement following the agreement. “It is a testament to our commitment to advancing research and education in the field of reproductive technologies.”

The collaboration between the IAEA and Chuka University is not limited to training programs. Prof. Mutembei also engaged in high-level discussions with Madam Amal Elrefaei, the IAEA Project Manager, to explore additional research collaborations and equipment support from the IAEA. These discussions were focused on further expanding the scope of the partnership to support scientific advancements and improve livestock management practices through technology and research.

The partnership’s potential benefits extend beyond Chuka University. The training and resources provided by the IAEA will enhance research capacities, enabling the university to continue contributing to the global scientific community. The summer school will also offer invaluable opportunities for researchers from different countries to collaborate and advance shared scientific goals.

“We are thrilled about the opportunities this collaboration brings,” said Madam Amal Elrefaei, IAEA Project Manager. “Through initiatives like these, we are not only strengthening the knowledge base in Africa but also ensuring that the latest advancements in assisted reproductive technologies are accessible to a wider range of researchers and institutions.”

The collaboration between the IAEA and Chuka University comes at a time when global research partnerships are increasingly important. Prof. Mutembei’s leadership has played a key role in elevating Chuka University’s global profile, with the university continuing to excel in attracting donor research funding and forging international ties.
