In a significant stride towards enhancing technical education, Kenya has witnessed a staggering 218.73% increase in the number of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions from 2013 to 2023.This is according to a recent survey carried out byTimely Kenya. This growth underscores the country’s commitment to equipping its youth with practical skills essential for driving economic progress.
According to the survey several other notable and encouraging trends were observed. Notably, female enrollment in TVET institutions is on the rise, indicating a positive shift towards bridging the gap in the male dominated field in technical education. This development is crucial as it aligns with national and global goals of empowering women through education and skill development.
The survey further revealed that 96% of constituencies in Kenya now have TVET institutions. This widespread availability ensures that more students, regardless of their geographical location, have access to quality technical education. It is a vital step in bridging the educational divide and fostering inclusive growth across the nation.
Despite the survey having a slight 1.1% bias , the findings still provide a reliable snapshot of the current state and progress of TVET institutions in Kenya.
Among the leading polytechnics, Kabete National Polytechnic, Sigalagala National Polytechnic, Meru National Polytechnic, Eldoret National Polytechnic, and Kenya Coast National Polytechnic stand out. They are ranked in order, with Kabete National Polytechnic the Kiambu based institution topping all 2,567TVETs nationwide.
The survey, which included responses from 3025 individuals, was meticulously conducted. It based 40% of its findings on public preferences and 60% on the Commitments for Results (CFR) from the Ministry of Public Service, Performance, and Delivery Management. This balanced approach ensured that the survey reflected both the needs of the public and the government’s strategic objectives.
The dramatic increase in TVET institutions is a reflection of Kenya’s broader development agenda. By prioritizing technical education, the country is preparing its youth to tackle the challenges of the modern workforce. This focus on practical skills is essential for driving innovation, improving productivity, and sustaining economic growth.
As Kenya continues to invest in technical education, it lays a strong foundation for a skilled workforce capable of driving the country towards a prosperous future.
