Capetown, South Africa- In a landmark decision, the University of Cape Town (UCT) has announced Professor Mosa Moshabela as its 11th vice-chancellor, succeeding Emeritus Professor Daya Reddy. The appointment follows a rigorous six-month recruitment process culminating in Professor Moshabela’s acceptance of the role, in the Africa’s top-ranked higher education institution effective from October 1, 2024.
Currently serving as the deputy vice-chancellor for research and innovation at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, Professor Moshabela brings a wealth of experience in academic leadership and health research. He is a distinguished member of the Academy of Science of South Africa and has garnered numerous accolades, including the PHILA Annual Award in 2022 for his contributions to public health and a Ministerial Special COVID-19 Award in 2020–2021.
He previously worked at Washington and Columbia universities in the United States, as well as South Africa’s University of the Witwatersrand . He also serves as chairperson of the board of the country’s National Research Foundation and is a member of the Academy of Science of South Africa. His career spans several prestigious roles and appointments, including Chairperson of the Governing Board at the National Research Foundation and Health Commissioner to the Premier of KwaZulu-Natal. Professor Moshabela’s research focuses on the implementation science of health innovations, with a strong emphasis on improving healthcare access and quality in resource-constrained settings, particularly in relation to HIV and TB.
Upon his appointment, Norman Arendse, Chair of the UCT Council, expressed confidence in Professor Moshabela’s ability to lead UCT through its next phase of growth. “Professor Moshabela is the best candidate for such a time as this in UCT’s history,” Arendse stated. “He has demonstrated a deep commitment to agile, transformative, and values-based leadership.”
The selection committee highlighted Professor Moshabela’s comprehensive understanding of UCT’s challenges and his dedication to sustainable leadership. His vision for UCT’s future includes enhancing research, fostering innovation, and strengthening partnerships both locally and globally.
Professor Moshabela will succeed Professor Daya Reddy, who has served as vice-chancellor on an interim basis since March 2023. Professor Reddy will work closely with Professor Moshabela over the next three months to ensure a smooth transition.
